Scottie walked a mile or two though it seemed like more than three then turned to say to Merlin, “Are you hungry?”

And Merlin said, “Quack,” though what he meant to say was, Yes, I am hungry. What about you?

Then Scottie, he agreed, “Why yes I’m hungry too. Let’s buy some food inside the store. I think that’s what we’ll do.”

So the two of them crossed the lot then turned to go inside but there upon the door was a sign that read, “No Ducks. This means you too, Merlin.”

And Merlin said, “Quack,” but what he meant to say was, I’ll wait out here while you go inside.

“But why?” Scottie asked as he was not yet old enough to read, being only in preschool and all.

“Quack,” was Merlin’s answer, but what he wanted to say was, No Ducks Allowed.

“Oh,” Scottie replied, “we’d best not break the rules. I’ll be right back.”
